VENEERS OR CROWNS? HOW TO IMPROVE YOUR SMILE?

Having perfect teeth is something many of us aspire to, because a harmonious smile conveys a sense of confidence, positivity and well-being.

However, a number of conditions (such as permanent stains, asymmetries, misalignments, anomalies in shape, enamel defects or gaps) may cause us to feel embarrassment and discomfort when showing our teeth.

If you wish to correct certain defects of your smile, such as shape and colour, you could consult your dentist, who will weight up different prosthetic options with you, involving the application of veneers or crowns.

WHAT ARE DENTAL VENEERS?

Dental veneers mostly serve an aesthetic purpose and are very thin resin or ceramic coverings applied onto the surface of teeth to mask any imperfections.

They are made-to-measure for each patient, so that they perfectly adapt to specific needs.

WHAT IS THEIR PURPOSE?

Frequently used in cosmetic dentistry, dental veneers are an opportunity for patients to improve the shape and colour of their teeth, for a more harmonious and even smile, in just a few sessions.

They can be applied onto one or more teeth, on the top and bottom arch, and are mostly positioned along the most visible parts of the smile (such as incisors and canines).

WHAT IS A DENTAL CROWN?

A crown, commonly referred to as a “cap”, is an artificial tooth which entirely covers a damaged natural tooth, in order to restore its look and function.

VENEERS OR CROWNS?

Veneers can often be fitted, however there are situations in which dental crowns are the best prosthetic rehabilitation option.

For example, in the presence of strong discolouration, or extensive decay, or for patients with parafunctions, like bruxism and/or clenching, crowns are undoubtedly the recommended solution.

Veneers can often be applied without “filing” teeth, whereas dental crowns require preparation before fitting.

ARE DENTAL IMPRESSIONS NECESSARY?

Yes, however today, with the use of intra oral scanners, the use of uncomfortable “pastes” can often be avoided.
