What are they?

Dental veneers are very thin resin or ceramic coverings applied onto the surface of teeth to mask any imperfections.

What is their purpose?

Through the creation of prosthetic structures, they are used to create a more harmonious smile, free from alignment defects and whiter compared to natural tooth colour.

When can they be used?

They can be used in numerous cases, here are just a few examples:

  • Reconstructed teeth with large, unsightly or deteriorated fillings
  • Teeth that are darker in colour due to devitalisation

  • Abraded teeth

  • Broken teeth

  • Teeth that are not correctly aligned

  • Teeth with “gaps” between them (“diastema”)

  • Irregular shaped teeth

  • Stained teeth due to the excessive use of antibiotics or fluoride in childhood, which cannot be resolved with dental whitening

What does the Dental Veneer fitting procedure involve?

The first step focuses on diagnosis and the development of a treatment plan; on a case by case basis, the dentist will develop a treatment plan that will satisfy patient expectations as regards their overall health and original condition of their mouth. After assessing these aspects, the professional will use the computer or plaster models to show the patient how their smile will be modified.  The teeth are then prepared for the fitting of dental veneers; each type requires a different procedure. Lastly, these prosthetic structures are positioned and stabilised with the use of adhesives. During follow-up visits, any correct integration of veneers will take place in the oral context of the patient.

What material are they made from?

They can be made from ceramic material or resins.

Is application painful?

Local anaesthetic is not always required for the application of dental veneers.

What’s the difference between a prosthetic crown and a dental veneer?

A dental veneer is only applied onto the front of a tooth, whereas a crown covers the entire visible surface in the mouth.

What do I need to do to maintain them over time?

Good oral hygiene practice, including the use of a toothbrush and flossing, just like you would do normally. Maintain a healthy lifestyle. Go for a dental check-up every 6 months.
