What does it mean?
Conscious sedation refers to a technique which reduces sensations of anxiety and fear that are commonly experienced among dental patients. The Dentist uses it to help patients, encourage their cooperation and ability to face necessary treatment.
What does it consist of?
Conscious sedation consists of a blend of nitrous protoxide and oxygen which is breathed in through a mask.
What effect does it generate?
The patient experiences pleasant psychological relaxation and enters a state of tranquillity. It also raises the pain threshold and reduces nausea. Sedation enables active cooperation as the patient is not “asleep” and is always conscious.
How long does the effect last?
For as long as it is administered.
Is it only used for adults?
Absolutely not, conscious sedation can also be a solution for uncooperative children and can also be used in every branch of dentistry.
What are the advantages?
- You can undergo dental treatment free from fear and anxiety.
- The administration of the nitrous protoxide-oxygen mixture induces a state of tranquillity in the patient in a very short time.
- The oxide is not harmful at all, it is not absorbed by our body and does not alter our psycho-physical balance. Seeing as it is harmless, the therapy can be applied if necessary, each time we must undergo dental treatment.
Are there contra-indications?
Only for patients with serious lung diseases and women in the last months of pregnancy.
Can I undergo treatment?
As always, you will be required to arrange a preliminary visit with Clinicians. After the first visit, the Professional will inform you whether treatment is suitable or not.
